- Litvánia történelme a legutóbbi jégkorszak utáni első betelepülőkkel kezdődött. Az ország neve írásban először 1009-ben jelent meg. A balti népekhez tartozó litvánok a 13. században megalapították a Litván Nagyfejedelemséget. A Teuton lovagrend keresztesháborújától függetlenségüket sikeresen megvédő litvánok az utolsó európai nép volt, amelyik felvette a kereszténységet (a 14. század elején). Meghódítva a tatárok által elpusztított Kijevi Rusz nyugati területeit, a 15. századra Litvánia Európa legnagyobb területű államává vált. 1385-ben a nagyfejedelemség perszonálunióba került Lengyelországgal, amely később az 1569-es lublini unióval államszövetséggé fejlődött. Az unió 1795-ig, Lengyelország és Litvánia utolsó felosztásáig tartott, amikor a litván földek a cári Oroszországhoz kerültek. Az Orosz Birodalom bukása után, 1918. február 16-án Litvánia kikiáltotta függetlenségét. A második világháború elején a Molotov–Ribbentrop-paktum következtében megszállta a Szovjetunió, és kényszerrel tagköztársaságává tette. Hároméves német megszállás után újból visszakerült a Szovjetunióhoz.
