- Edmund Kirby Smith az Egyesült Államok szárazföldi hadseregének hivatásos tisztje volt, aki az Amerikai Konföderációs Államok hadseregében szolgált az amerikai polgárháború folyamán. Augusztusban Braxton Bragg altábornaggyal együtt részt vett a konföderációs , mely Kentucky visszaszerzését célozta. A visszavonulást követően kinevezték altábornaggyá és Bragg Tennessee hadseregének hadtestparancsnoka lett. 1863. januárjában kinevezték a Trans-Mississippi adminisztratív körzet parancsnokának. A Mississippintúli hadszíntér azonban nagyban elszigetelődött a Konföderáció többi területéről az uniós hadseregek és a flotta előrenyomulásával a Mississippi-völgyében. Területét 'Kirby Smithség' néven emlegették. A 1864 tavaszán az irányítása alá tartozó altábornagy legyőzte a vezérőrnagy parancsnoksága alatt a mexikói határ felé előrenyomuló hadseregét. 1865. május 26-án a texasi Galvestonban letette a fegyvert és a fenyegető letartóztatás elől külföldre szökött. Felesége eszközölte ki hazatérését. A háború után Smith a távíró- és vasútiparban dolgozott és főiskolai professzor lett. (hu)
