- Sir John Franklin kapitány északnyugati átjárói expedíciója (avagy Franklin elveszett expedíciója) egy tragikus véget ért északi sarkköri brit felfedezőút volt 1845–48 között. Franklin expedíciója irodalmi alkotások hősies témájává vált. Az 1980-as években folytatott ásatások eredményei szerint a hideg és az éhség mellett skorbut, tüdőgyulladás, tuberkulózis és vezetett a csoport pusztulásához. Egyes csontokon talált vágásnyomok kannibalizmusra utalnak. 2014 szeptemberében egy robot-tengeralattjáró segítségével megtalálták az expedícióhoz tartozó egyik hajó, az Erebus jó állapotban megőrződött roncsát a , a Vilmos király-sziget közelében.
