- Makaó története mintegy 6000 évre nyúlik vissza, és napjainkig számos nép és kultúra alakította az államalakulat történelmét. Makaó jelenleg a Kínai Népköztársaság Különleges igazgatású területe. 1557-ben a terület portugál gyarmat lett, azonban továbbra is kínai hatalom és szuverenitás alatt állt, Portugália csupán bérlő maradt az általa kereskedelmi központnak használt Makaóban. Önrendelkezési jogát csak az 1840-es években nyerte el, majd az 1887-ben megkötött kínai-portugál szerződés értelmében 1999-ig Makaó portugál felségterület lett, és csak ezt követően került vissza Kínához. Makaó volt az utolsó megmaradt európai gyarmatterület Ázsia kontinentális részén, portugál gyarmat pedig az egész Földön. (hu)
