- A Potomac hadsereg az Unió fő hadserege volt az Amerikai polgárháború keleti hadszínterén. A Potomac hadsereg végigharcolta a keleti hadszíntér összes küzdelmét, elsősorban Virginia, Maryland és Pennsylvania földjén. A háború vége után 1865. június 28-án oszlatták fel, a milliós nagyságú tömeghadsereg feleslegessé válása utáni revíziót követően. Hasonló néven, Army of the Potomac-ként nevezte el P. G. T. Beauregard tábornagy is a konföderációs oldalon harcoló hadseregét a háború elején, mielőtt összevonták Joseph E. Johnston . Beauregard az összevonás után is megtartotta a nevet önállóságának védelmében, de az végképp kikopott a használatból a nyugati hadszíntérre távoztát követően. Az uniós oldal viszont éppen ezt a nevet választotta az átszervezést követően. Az Unió rendszeresen nevezte el hadseregeit azok működési körzeteibe eső nagyobb folyókról, a konföderációs oldalon azonban inkább államokról, vagy azok részegységeiről neveztek el hadseregeket. (hu)
