- Sir John Alexander Macdonald (Glasgow, 1815. január 11. – Ottawa, 1891. június 6.) Kanada első miniszterelnöke (1867–1873, 1878–1891). A , politikai pályája csaknem fél évszázadot meghatározott. Macdonald Skóciában született, gyermekkorában családja a ma Kelet-Ontarióban található emigrált. Ügyvédként számos jelentős ügyben képviselte megbízóit, gyorsan Kingston prominens személyisége lett, a város 1844-ben jogalkotójának jelölte. 1857-ben lett a gyarmat ingatag politikai helyzete időszakában. 1864-ben, amikor egyetlen párt sem bizonyult hosszú távon kormányzóképesnek, Macdonald elfogadta politikai riválisa, javaslatát, mely szerint a pártoknak kellene alakítani, hogy véghezvihessenek szövetségi és politikai reformokat.
