- A buddhizmus filozófiai, gyakorlatalapú világnézet és vallás, amely bizonyos országokban vallási irányzatok kialakulását eredményezte. Az i. e. 6. században jött létre Indiában, s elsősorban azoknak a körében terjedt, akik a hinduizmus által szentesített kasztrendszer ellen tiltakoztak. A buddhizmus nagy mértékben Gautama Sziddhártha, közismertebb nevén Buddha (páli/szanszkrit nyelven „a megvilágosodott”), tanításain alapszik, aki az indiai szubkontinens északkeleti részén élt és tanított. Buddha valamikor az i. e. 6. és 4. század között élt. Megvilágosodott tanítóként ismerték, aki igyekezett megosztani másokkal saját tapasztalatait, azzal a céllal, hogy megszabaduljanak a szenvedéstől, elérjék a nirvána állapotát, és kiléphessenek az újjászületés és szenvedés örökös körforgásából. A buddhizmusra hagyományosan úgy tekintenek, mint a megszabadulás útjára, melyet a valóság legvégső természetének megismerésén keresztül lehet elérni. A buddhizmus három fő ága a hínajána („kis út"), a mahájána („nagy út”) és a vadzsrajána („gyémánt út”). A hínajána buddhizmus egyik legősibb, máig fennmaradt alága a théraváda buddhizmus, amelyet sokan követnek Srí Lankán és Délkelet-Ázsiában. A mahájána ág Kelet-Ázsia-szerte terjedt el, melyhez a zen buddhizmus, a nicsiren buddhizmus, a tibeti buddhizmus, a singon buddhizmus és a tendai buddhizmus hagyományai tartoznak. A harmadik ág a vadzsrajána buddhizmus, amely egyesek szerint a mahájána egyik ága. Számos forrás szerint a buddhisták száma a világon 230 és 500 millió között van. Magyarországon a 2010-es években a gyakorló buddhisták és a valláshoz szorosabban kötődők száma kb. 10 ezer fő körül van. A buddhista iskolák olykor különböző módon tekintenek a megszabaduláshoz vezető útra, illetve a szent szövegekre és tanításokra.
